Help students start to understand how plants grow
Talk about what seeds need to grow
Develop fine motor skills through planting, drawing, and cutting
Permanent markers for drawing
Plastic cup for planting (make sure marker can draw on whatever material you use)
Potting soil
Spoons or small shovels
Grass seed
Water in water can or spray bottle
Set up a couple stations with the materials listed above
Read Harriet’s Haircut to your child or class. Talk about soil and what they learned about how plants grow. Ask if they have any questions.
Ask if they would like to give Harriet a haircut too!
Give each child a container and have them draw a face on it with the marker. (write their name on the bottom of the cup!)
Have students fill their cups with potting soil using a spoon or shovel. (Don’t fill all the way to the top as you will need room to cover the seeds with more soil.)
Look at the seeds with your students and ask them what they notice about the seeds. Let them touch them and describe what they feel like. Explain that the outside is a seed coat and talk about what happens to these seeds once they are planted.
Have the students sprinkle a handful of seeds onto the soil and then cover them with more soil.
Water the seeds. You can help with a flower watering pot or use spray bottles. Spray bottles are great for fine motor skills and help avoid spills.
Put the cups near a window where they will get some sunlight.
Remember to water the plants a little each day! (even when the grass starts to grow)
Have students tell you what they see each day and keep a journal of the progress.
When the grass is tall enough, let your students give their cups a haircut.
